AFRICA Rising!

Africa rising - but who benefits?

Many of the fastest growing economies in the world are in Africa.
The continent's future appears to be bright, but do growth figures reflect an improving quality of life?
It is a story that is being told with increasing frequency.
Against the backdrop of a prolonged slump that has brought financial paralysis to much of the Western world, experts have identified Africa as having many of the world's fastest-growing economies.
Some point to the fact that high growth rates should be viewed in context, since African economies - mostly relatively small - are expanding from a low base, making improvements seem disproportionately impressive.
But, while the US and UK struggle to emerge from prolonged recessions and European nations such as Greece and Spain experience mass unemployment, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank say countries such as Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Mozambique are experiencing a boom.

Many have ascribed this trend to what they believe are burgeoning middle classes in many nations.
The African Development Bank's (AfDB) chief economist Mthuli Ncube has described this trajectory as "unstoppable."
For renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs, the mobile phone has become a symbol of this apparent new dawn. He has described it, and the access to the internet that it can bring, as the single most transformative tool for development.

Mobile communications have been at the forefront of Africa's boom
More than 70% of adults in Nigeria - the continent's most highly populated country - own a handset.
And in Kenya the widespread use of mobile phone payment software has opened up opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses by providing ease and flexibility where transactions and banking are concerned.
Farmers, for example, can receive the latest market prices with a single text message or gather information about sales and stock.
The ubiquity of mobile phones in Africa has also created a new breed of entrepreneur that can be found in cities as far apart as Dakar, Dar es Salaam and Durban - the vendor selling air time.
Salim Evoudidi, one such salesman in the Democratic Republic of Congo, seems to typify the type of aspirational worker said to be driving the emerging middle class.
He arrives at his regular spot on a busy street in the capital, Kinshasa, beside other air time vendors, at around 0700 and works for nearly 12 hours every day.
"I have a family, I have a wife and four children. I've been able to send three of them to school and rent a house for us," he says.
"I've been doing this job since 2005 - so, for seven years. There is an evolution. There are more and more customers - Congolese people spend a lot on telecommunications."
Mr Evoudidi's ambition is to start a business, and he hopes the money he makes in his current venture will generate enough money to provide a launch pad.
The notion of "Africa rising" - the term that journalists have coined when referring to the idea of economic development on the continent - has, for some, become hackneyed, with bloggers now calling it a meme.
The Economist, which famously labelled Africa the "Hopeless Continent" in 2000, inverted that idea more than a decade later for special coverage looking at what it now considers to be the hopeful continent.
But, beneath the surface of what appears to be a good news story in a part of the world previously portrayed in the Western media as being ravaged by war and famine, questions remain.
What constitutes middle class status? And does that term really point to a heightened quality of life?

Dolce and Gabana Sentenced to Jail!

Italian fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been sentenced to jail in Italy for one year and eight months for tax evasion.
They were accused of hiding millions of euros from Italian tax authorities.
The pair, whose customers have included Madonna, Kate Moss and Kylie Minogue, were not at the trial, deny the charges and have appealed.
Dolce and Gabbana have not commented on their sentences, which have been suspended pending their appeal.
The investigation by the Italian authorities began around six years ago as part of a government plan to crack down on tax avoidance.
At the hearing on Wednesday, the judge ruled that the designers moved their brand to a Luxembourg-based holding company Gado - an anagram of their two surnames - in 2004.
He said they had done this to avoid declaring taxes on royalties of around 1 billion euros (£833m; $1.3bn).
Prosecutors alleged they sold the business for well below actual market value.
They were initially cleared of the charges at a previous trial in April 2011 but Italy's highest court overturned that ruling, ordering that the case should be sent back.

MONEY found inside drainage channels in Nigeria!

"Nigeria Money, money every where, in the gotter, in the refuse Dump". That was what a Lebanese man said to me one certain afternoon. I had gone to his office for product marketing and was complaining to him to gain pity and close the business. I had told him how hard it is to make money in Nigeria when you have no helper to set you up. And he said the aforementioned. I was both confused and demoralized. After some while he asked me to go and return in two weeks time. I left, this time angry. As I managed to fight myself into an already crowded Molue-bus, I couldn't find a seat, so I stood like many others as the bus ran through the Mainland bridge. I was so lost in thought as we traveled, suddenly I saw a refuse dump where some dirty and stinking Abokis were searching and picking things I know not. Then, the words of that my good friend flash through my subconscious mind again. I ask myself what could this people be doing with this horrible dirts!

When I got to my transit point, I headed back to my office, on my arrival, I found out my Electricity connection was bad as some trucks had passed through the narrow part way and vandalized it. So I reached for my phone and called an electrician to help restore it. To my surprise he told be"oga na 5k ooo!, if not I no go come, I dey busy". Hmmm I knew it wasn't up to that amount, but then I was in dare need so I could print some documents for the next day. I agreed, so he came. And after about 10minutes he was done and I kept my promise. When he left I felt so ashamed that an ordinary electrician could make 5,000 naira from me under 10munutes. But again can I do the job? No!

On my way home same day, I decided to go to a bank to check my little account balance as I have received a debit  alert  earlier. Unfortunately for my sorry self, the bank just shot their door to customers. It was 4:pm. As I stood outside the bank I saw a certain dirty Aboki with a black bag, when he approached the gatekeepers of the bank, he was allowed access into the bank. I got even more angry and disturbed their peace till I was let in. When I was done, I walked to the Aboki and inquired from him how he makes that kind of money, because I was told he comes with that volume daily. To my enchantment, he told me"walahi oga, I dey buy am, dey sell am for condemn Iron". According him, he buys the condemned irons from the boys that goes round the streets and sell them to recycling companies who make use of to produce irons.

I knew then that I was actually the cause of my lean pocket. I remembered again the words of the Lebanese earlier. But I promised myself I won't be angrier.  I needed to think and fast at that. So when I got home, I earnestly entered into my inner being, I searched through the day's experience, and I picked one thing. I have to learn to provide a solution to many of people's needs. So what do people really need? I asked myself. I needed to think deeper.,,,,, every other gists are now history, a sweet story at that.

Filling in needs of people is all you need to make money in Nigeria. People always need services, no man is an island. Stop criticizing govt. And start thinking for your future. Look around you and pick one need you feel people can't do without. Then let me know, I will lead you through the journey. See you at the top...

Confession online? New smartphone app: Technology and the Church

NEW YORK: A new smartphone app that lets busy Catholic priests update their statuses to let people know when and where they are available to listen to their confessions has been developed in the US.

Father Richard Heilman in Madison, Wisconsin, is launching a My Confessor App that will let his parishioners know when and where he is available to listen to their sins.

A red status box means 'Father is OUT'. A green status box means 'Father is IN'. And priests have a special log in that lets them easily update their statuses and even post messages, according to app developer Mary HoerrNew York Daily News reported.

The app also has a section explaining the sacrament of confession, as well as another place where users can read priests' bios.
Heilman is the only priest on the app for now but he says several other priests have reached out and asked to get involved.

The app currently serves people in the Madison area. However, Heilman sees this going national.
The number of Catholic priests in America has declined in recent decades, according to data collected by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.

In 1965, more than 58,000 Catholic priests belonged to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. In 2012, that number was closer to 39,000.
On the other hand, the number of people who self-identify as Catholics has grown from 48.5 million to 78.2 million.
"It's challenging sometimes for priests to find time for confession because they have work to do. And parishioners are trying to go easy on Father because they see us trying to handle multiple things," Heilman said.  Can't wait to start selling this software to my Priest friends in Nigeria. Lol

Marketers Makes More Money

Most employees and Entrepreneurs are scared of the word "Marketing". Why because they are ignorant of the gains of effective marketing. Every business, every idea, every product no matter how thorough and interesting it is, needs more exposure to the targeted consumers. So to claim that a good product speaks for its self, is but wrong assertion. Employees are afraid to work under marketing division of their employers because naturally they are lazy and shortsighted. And some employers don't treat their marketers better either. And that is the reason businesses are failing. Every successful business has always been a product of its workforce. And that is marketing.

Now, what is Marketing?
Marketing is an activity. Marketing activities and strategies result in making products available that satisfy customers while making profits for the companies that offer those products What Activities are Included in Marketing?
Marketing activities are numerous and varied because they basically include everything needed to get a product off the drawing board and into the hands of the customer. The broad field of marketing includes activities such as:
  • Designing the product so it will be desirable to customers by using tools such as marketing research and pricing.
  • Promoting the product so people will know about it by using tools such as public relations, advertising, and marketing communications.
  • Setting a price and letting potential customers know about your product and making it available to them.
  • Developing a good marketing team to drive the business into the hearts of consumers.
Small businesses suffer marketing defects due to the fact that most business owners dwell on the core expertise of their services and that some product providers make wrong marketing decisions by employing the wrong personnels and refusing to re-train them. When you cut conners in business, the adverse effect will cost the soul of the business. As an entrepreneur, the first thing to do before planning a business is to develop a communicative personality, the type that can stand before the President of a country and effectively pass a message across. That can face a 2000 audience and speak without mincing words.
It is a prerequisite to business start up. It is funny how some claim that every person can be a marketer without trainings. That's why many Bank's marketers/sales persons continually fail on target mission, not minding the fact that they are actually trained by their employers. But because that personal flare to communicate effectively is practically absent.
Personal development is key. And communication is the "Master Key".

Keep up with me, let's open your subconscious mind. You are created to be a success! You are genius. Don't waste it.
